How to make a great, homemade mulled wine
Christmas is the perfect time for mulled wine and it’s ultra-simple to make at home. There’s no need to buy bottles of mediocre pre-made mulled wine, and you also don’t need to buy expensive sachets of mulled wine spices. I’m fussy about mulled wine – I don’t like it too watery, but neither do I like the unexpected addition of port or brandy which throws me when I’m trying to keep track of how much I’ve drunk.
The key is to keep it simple – a good bottle of full-bodied, polyphenol-packed, cabernet sauvignon, rioja or shiraz, lots of fresh fruit, good quality whole spices and flavourful, mineral-rich molasses sugar to add more sweetness.
